As an experienced hypnotherapist and meditation facilitator, I've personally experienced and witnessed firsthand how our thoughts can shape our emotional well-being. So, let's dive in and explore how positive thinking can transform your life!  This is what The Mindful Movement is all about, so I’ll be sure to offer some amazing stress-relieving practices for you to try out.

Understanding the Impact of Thoughts on Stress and Anxiety

Stress and anxiety often go hand in hand with our thoughts. It's like a dance between our minds and bodies. Negative thoughts can trigger a cascade of emotions and physical sensations, intensifying our stress response. This mind-body connection plays a crucial role in understanding how we can break free from stress and anxiety.

From a cognitive-behavioral perspective, our automatic negative thoughts (ANTs) can fuel our stress and anxiety. These sneaky little critters creep into our minds, feeding us distorted views of reality. But fear not! We have the power to challenge and reframe these negative thoughts.

Using the Power of Positive Thinking

Let's start by recognizing those negative thought patterns that might be fueling your stress and anxiety. Do you find yourself constantly expecting the worst or engaging in self-critical thinking? Identifying these patterns is the first step towards change.

Additionally, with curiosity and compassion seek to understand how these patterns have served you is an important step.  Has expecting the worst given you a sense of control and protection from potential pain?  Has your inner critic protected you from being criticized and hurt by others?

Give this guided practice a try to help understand all parts of yourself.

Once you've pinpointed those negative thoughts and their purpose, it's time to appreciate and reframe them. Picture this: You're faced with a stressful situation at work, and your automatic thought is, "I'm going to mess this up and embarrass myself." Take a moment to pause, thank the inner critic for protecting you, and then question the validity of that thought. Is there evidence to support it? Probably not. “Is this absolutely true?” Probably not.

Reframe it to something like, "I'm capable and have handled challenges before. I can handle this too."

Cultivating a Positive Mindset

Now that we're on the path to understanding and reframing negative thoughts, it's time to cultivate a positive mindset. Think of positivity as a superpower that can guide you through life's challenges.

Reframing is helpful in the moment when the negative thoughts come up, and it is also important to have a practice as a way or re-training your mind to see the world through a positive lens.  Start by practicing gratitude. Each day, take a moment to reflect on three things you're grateful for. It could be as simple as a warm cup of coffee in the morning or a supportive friend.

Affirmations are another powerful tool. They're positive statements that help rewire your brain and shift your mindset. Repeat affirmations like, "I am calm and capable of overcoming any challenge." Trust me, it works wonders!

**Important note:  To make the affirmations even more effective, first look at where the negative beliefs that are opposing the affirmations were first developed, let them go, and forgive yourself for believing them in the first place.  Watch as your mind more easily adopts the new positive beliefs.

In this video, I talk about this step that is often overlooked when using affirmations.
